The invention relates to a sludge fence capable of horizontally extending. The present invention also relates to a sludge fence system comprising a horizontally extendable sludge fence comprising a permeable geotextile material having an upper edge and a lower edge, and a plurality of columns comprising: an upper portion constructed and arranged to couple with the upper edge of the permeable geotextile material; a lower portion constructed and arranged to couple with a lower edge of the water permeable geotextile material; and an anchoring portion constructed and arranged to be driven underground to anchor the column. A method of filtering sludge from a fluid stream is also disclosed.
