A method for adding a soft metal to a hard coating in a physical vapor deposition process. The method comprises the following steps: providing a base material; depositing a bonding layer on the substrate; and depositing the hard coating on the bond layer using vapor deposition wherein the soft metal forms an islanding in the hard coating.
