The invention relates to an I-shaped steel connecting piece and a butt joint method, the connecting piece comprises a sleeving piece allowing two pieces of I-shaped steel to be in butt joint to be connected in an inserted mode and two sets of fastening pieces used for fixing the two pieces of I-shaped steel to be in butt joint to the sleeving piece respectively, and the sleeving piece is provided with an inserting groove with an I-shaped section in the full length direction; two groups of first open holes for two groups of fasteners to penetrate through are formed in the side surface of the sleeving piece in a penetrating manner; and a group of second open holes for a group of fasteners to penetrate through are formed in the to-be-butted ends of the webs of the two pieces of I-shaped steel to be butted. The two pieces of to-be-treated I-shaped steel can be connected without welding through the sleeving piece, and the technical problem that in the prior art, welding and butt joint construction of the I-shaped steel is limited is solved. The device is a component used for lengthening the short I-shaped steel, is beneficial to reuse of the short I-shaped steel on site, and particularly can be used for lengthening the short I-shaped steel under the condition of no electric welding operation on site.
