In one example, a system is disclosed that prevents a flip door from rising without installing a guardrail. The system includes a guardrail having a post, and a post having a post claw. The system also includes a safety latch mechanism configured to be coupled to the fixed structure. The safety latch mechanism includes a body, a socket disposed in the body and configured to receive the post, and a latch rotatably coupled to the body and biased in a latched position configured to hold the flap door in the lowered position. Based on insertion of the post into the socket of the safety latch mechanism, the post pawl engages the latch and rotates the latch from the latched position to the unlocked position, allowing the flap door to rise from the lowered position to the raised position.
