The invention discloses an electric vehicle thermal runaway alarm method and system. The battery management system monitors the temperature, the temperature change rate and the smoke concentration in the power battery of the electric vehicle in real time, and when any one of the temperature, the temperature change rate and the smoke concentration reaches a set threshold value, the battery management system is activated; the activated battery management system sends an awakening message and a thermal runaway alarm state to a whole vehicle controller, a vehicle body controller, a fault diagnosis instrument and an instrument control unit; the whole vehicle controller is awakened by the awakening message, after a thermal runaway alarm state is received, a whole vehicle high-voltage power-off instruction is sent to a battery management system, and then a discharge instruction is sent to a driving system controller; the fault diagnosis instrument uploads the fault to a server after receiving the thermal runaway alarm state; after the instrument control unit receives the thermal runaway alarm state, a fault lamp is lightened, and a buzzer is used for sounding and early warning; and after the vehicle body controller receives the thermal runaway alarm state, the vehicle door lock is unlocked.
