The invention relates to a mixed oxide of aluminum, zirconium, cerium, lanthanum and optionally at least one rare earth metal other than cerium and lanthanum, which makes it possible to produce a catalyst that maintains good thermal stability and good catalytic activity after severe aging. The invention also relates to a method for preparing such a mixed oxide and to a method for treating exhaust gases from internal combustion engines using a catalyst prepared from such a mixed oxide.
