The invention relates to a device for the heat treatment of solid materials, in particular of particulate form, where the device comprises a kiln comprising at least one inclined sliding surface on which a bed of solid material slides downwards in the kiln due to gravity, and an external heat generator, at the same time, a hot gas generated by an external heat generator is directed through the solid material to heat the solid material to a desired temperature, thereby changing the material properties of the solid material. According to the invention, the external heat generator for generating the hot gas is outside the kiln, the kiln further comprising at least one kiln gas inlet through which the hot gas enters the kiln, such that the necessary temperature of the hot gas can be precisely controlled, because the hot gas is generated in the external heat generator, this ensures that the solid material is not subjected to temperatures above a maximum allowable temperature, and further that the solid material is not exposed to radiation from the burner.
