A neonatal incubator system includes a housing having side panels forming a chamber to receive an infant. The at least one side panel is movable between a vertically closed position and a retracted open position. The side panel latch assembly is positioned to allow and prevent movement of the movable side panel between the open position and the closed position. The side panel latch assembly includes a movable latch bar having a primary latch member and a secondary latch member spaced apart from each other. The primary latch member engages a first catch located on the latch receptacle to retain the side panel latch assembly in a latched position. When the side panel portion is opened, the auxiliary latch member engages a second catch located on the latch receptacle. The primary latch member and the secondary latch member move with the latch bar to release the primary latch member and the secondary latch member.
