A method of treating a carbon or ceramic wire (150), the method comprising: forming a coating on the wire at least in a reaction zone (115) of a reactor (220) by heating a section (156) of the wire in a microwave field in the presence of a gas phase, characterized in that the gas phase comprises a dilution gas (200a; 200a, 200b) and a coating precursor in the vaporous state, and wherein a gas phase is formed at least by introducing the dilution gas into the reactor and mixing the introduced dilution gas with the coating precursor (140) in the reactor prior to the reaction zone.
