Highly dense red mud shield for x-and gamma-ray attenuation
A novel environmentally friendly method has been developed for the manufacture of highly dense (3.3-5.2 g/cc) blocks of red mud-based materials for shielding high energy X-and gamma-rays. The red mud-based material blocks having various densities are manufactured by hot compacting partially molten red mud, red mud: Bi2O3, red mud: Ba (OH) 2, and red mud: Bi2O3: Ba (OH) 2 samples at 1150 DEG C, 1000 DEG C, 1050 DEG C, and 1000 DEG C, respectively. This material can be used to build radiation shielding structures in medical diagnostics, radiation therapy, industrial radiography, particle accelerators, food disinfection factories, nuclear power plants and radioactive material storage chambers without requiring further structural supports (concrete walls) as lead. This is economically feasible and will inhibit the accumulation of hazardous red mud and associated environmental pollution.
