The invention relates to a method for producing a backfill paste for subterranean work, said method comprising or consisting essentially of mixing a) cement, b) tailings from subterranean work, c) optionally, additional water, d) at least one polycarboxylate ether, and e) calcium hydroxide. The invention also relates to a method of controlling the flow of a backfill paste for subterranean operations, said method comprising at least one step of blending an admixture comprising at least one polycarboxylate ether and calcium hydroxide into a mixture of cement, tailings and water.
