The road construction machine according to the invention comprises a machine frame supported by a chassis, on which machine frame a working device is arranged, which has a working means fastened to a carriage, which is guided on a linear guide. The carriage is movable in a lateral direction by rotating the cable roller. The road construction machine features a cable roller having first and second roller halves, one end of the cable being secured to one roller half and the other end of the cable being secured to the other roller half, and the cable winch being capable of assuming a first mode of operation in which the first and second roller halves are connected to each other, the carriage is moved by rotating the first and/or the second roller. The cable winch can assume a second mode of operation in which the first and second roller halves are rotatable in opposite directions at least in one direction of rotation such that cable tension can be adjusted by rotating one roller half relative to the other roller half.
