A tailgate opening and closing system according to the present invention is provided with a control device for controlling an opening and closing device for opening and closing a tailgate disposed on a rear surface portion of a vehicle, the tailgate opening and closing system being provided with a measurement device which is disposed on a portion of the rear surface portion lower than the tailgate in a closed state, and which sequentially acquires distance data, the control device performs a process of acquiring a plurality of consecutive distance data from the measurement device, the distance data being data of a distance to an object that exists rearward of the rear face part, and the control device performs a process of determining the distance based on the plurality of consecutive distance data acquired by the measurement device. A data processing unit that checks an entry operation of an object into a trigger region within a measurement range of the measurement device and an exit operation of the object from the trigger region; and a control process for opening and closing the tailgate by means of an opening and closing device on the basis of a combination of the confirmed entry operation and exit operation.
