The present application describes a process for the continuous production of alpha-calcium sulfate hemihydrate, the process comprising the steps of: providing particulate gypsum; providing water; mixing the particulate gypsum and water to form a gypsum slurry; and maintaining the gypsum slurry at an elevated pressure and an elevated temperature to convert the particulate gypsum to an alpha-calcium sulfate hemihydrate and provide an alpha-calcium sulfate hemihydrate slurry. Further, the particulate gypsum includes a D10 value greater than or equal to 2 [mu] m, a D90 value less than or equal to 90 [mu] m, and a D50 value less than or equal to 25 [mu] m. Granular gypsum for use in the process is also provided.
