The invention relates to an accelerant for reaction of steelmaking slag and water. The accelerator is selected from alkanolamine, reducing agent, sugar, sugar acid, carboxylic acid or salt thereof, amino acid or salt thereof, sulfamic acid, glyoxal, acetylacetone, pyrocatechol, nitrilotris (methylphosphonic acid), isethionate, mineral salt or a mixture thereof. The invention also relates to a binder comprising steel slag and said accelerator and to the use thereof in building materials.
