The present invention relates generally to mortar compositions and in particular to fireproof mortar compositions which are human-friendly and exhibit good workability, excellent mechanical properties and high fire resistance properties, suitable for use as fireproof coatings for building structures, especially steel building structures such as reinforcing steel bars or tunnels. The invention relates to a mortar composition comprising:-a hydraulic binder, preferably in an amount of 10-50% by weight, based on the total weight of the composition; -polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers, preferably in an amount of 0.1-1.0 wt%, based on the total weight of the composition; and-lightweight aggregate, preferably in an amount of 10-60 wt%, based on the total weight of the composition.
