The invention discloses a masonry mortar formula for building and a test method, the masonry mortar formula comprises 150g of cement, 748.2 g of sand, 1.8 g of hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose, 100g of fly ash, 1.8 g of hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose, 92% of a hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose pure product, 3% of dispersible latex powder, 2% of starch ether, 2% of bentonite, 1% of polyacrylamide, and the balance of water. The modified cellulose has the advantages that the water retention rate, compressive strength, bonding strength and shrinkage rate of mortar prepared from the modified cellulose conform to the numerical range of technical indexes, the water retention rate, compressive strength and bonding strength are obviously higher than the technical indexes, and the shrinkage rate is obviously lower than the technical indexes; the starch ether, the bentonite, the polyacrylamide and the dispersible rubber powder are added into the hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose, so that the water retention rate and the bonding strength are remarkably improved, the shrinkage rate is reduced, and the performance is better than that of similar products sold in the market.
