The invention belongs to the technical field of ceramsite preparation, and provides coal gasification slag unfired ceramsite and a preparation method thereof. The raw materials of the coal gasification slag unfired ceramsite comprise a coal gasification slag unfired ceramsite matrix, a binding agent, an alkali activator, a water reducing agent and water, wherein the coal gasification slag unfired ceramsite matrix is prepared from the following components in percentage by mass: 50-60% of coal gasification slag, 15-30% of fly ash, 5-15% of river sand and 15-20% of cement; the use amounts of the binding agent and the alkali activator are 7-10% and 0-3% of the mass of the coal gasification slag unfired ceramsite matrix respectively. By utilizing the characteristics of low apparent density and pozzolanic activity of the coal gasification slag raw material, the invention aims to prepare the unfired ceramsite with low volume density, low water absorption rate and high strength by adjusting the raw material ratio and the quantity of the alkali activator without adding a pore-forming agent and without surface treatment on the basis of ensuring that the mixing amount of the coal gasification slag is greater than or equal to 50% and the mixing amount of the cement is less than or equal to 20%.
