A hydraulic shovel (1) is provided with a work attachment (20), a drive unit (71), a load sensor (61), a mechanical load calculation unit (503), a soil pressure load calculation unit (504), and a soil texture estimation unit (505). A mechanical load calculation unit (503) calculates a mechanical load, which is the load received by the bucket (23) from the sand, on the basis of the attitude information of the work attachment (20) and information relating to the load received by the drive unit (71). A soil pressure load calculation unit (504) calculates a soil pressure load, which is a load applied to the bucket (23) by a soil block, on the basis of a soil pressure theory, on the basis of the shape of the soil block comprising the soil excavated by the bucket (23), the attitude information, the shape of the bucket (23), the density of the soil, and the wall friction angle between the soil and the bucket (23). A soil texture estimation unit (505) estimates the soil texture of the soil at the work site on the basis of the mechanical load and the soil pressure load.
