The invention relates to a retaining wall structure and a construction method thereof.The retaining wall structure comprises a prefabricated hollow retaining wall, the hollow retaining wall is fixed to the ground through embedded bars, and hanging bars are arranged at the top of the hollow retaining wall; the hollow retaining wall comprises a soil-backing side wall and a soil-facing side wall, a cavity is formed between the soil-backing side wall and the soil-facing side wall, and cavity connecting ribs are evenly distributed in the cavity. The soil-back side wall and the soil-facing side wall both comprise structural steel bars, and the two ends of the cavity connecting rib are connected with the structural steel bars of the two side walls respectively. Concrete pouring is conducted on the side wall of the hollow retaining wall, and the hollow retaining wall is transferred after pouring is completed; and after the hollow retaining wall is connected with the embedded bars, the two side walls are connected into an integral structure by pouring the cavity.
