A diving data center (180, 180a, 180b) configured in a watertight compartment for deployment in a body of water is described. A data center capsule (180, 180a, 180b) is mounted on a diving platform (110) of an elevator installation (100, 100a) equipped with a support leg (130a) or a plurality of support legs (130), and a winch (132) is located near the top of the support leg or each of the plurality of support legs; thus, the datacenter bay (180, 180a, 180b) can be submerged underwater for operation, or lifted over the water surface with a winch for retrieval or maintenance. A first deployment of the support legs (130, 130a) is provided by a leg lowering winch (112) located on the diving platform (110). A heat exchanger (190) or a cooler (190a) is used, or a centralized cooler (190b) is used, to dissipate heat energy from inside the data center bay (180, 180a, 180b) into the surrounding water. A corresponding method of operation is also described.
