A battery powered Roman curtain system may include a first bracket and a second bracket for mounting the curtain system to a structure; the reel pipe is rotatably supported by the first bracket and the second bracket; and a housing configured to receive one or more batteries at a first end of the housing for supplying power to a motor drive unit inside the reel tube. The housing may also be configured to support a lift assist subsystem at a second end of the housing. The lift assist subsystem is configured to provide variable lift assist to the motor drive unit. The curtain system may also include a battery holder for holding the one or more batteries. For example, the housing may include an interior compartment for housing the battery holder and the lift assist subsystem. In addition, the curtain system may include a gear assembly configured to mechanically couple the reel tube to the lift assist subsystem.
