The invention relates to hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose capable of improving cracking resistance of mortar as well as a preparation method and application thereof, on one hand, the preparation method of the hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose capable of improving the cracking resistance of the mortar is provided, and the hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose is prepared through crushing pretreatment, alkalization, etherification, crosslinking, solvent recovery and aftertreatment. On the other hand, the prepared hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose is applied to mortar, cement, yellow sand, fly ash and glass beads are stirred and mixed to be uniform, then the hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose, a surfactant, anti-crack fibers, a mildew preventive and a polycarboxylic acid high-performance water reducing agent are added into the mixture and mixed to be uniform, water is added, stirring is conducted again, and the mortar is prepared. The hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose is high in gas content and appropriate in viscosity, the binding power, the water retention rate and the cracking resistance of the mortar can be effectively improved, the problem of damp cracking caused by bacteria and mildewing is further avoided by combining the hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose with the mildew preventive, and the mortar can be used for a long time in southern humid areas.
