The invention discloses an urban renovation and construction method for constructing tropical swimming lagoons in vacant sites and/or abandoned sites. The renovation includes removing at least a portion of the vacant site or waste site, excavating material from within the site; a basin for a large body of water having a surface area of at least 3,000 m2 is formed, and a water containment wall is built on a first section of the basin to form a waterfront perimeter. The shape of the waterfront perimeter is mainly curved, the maximum width of the basin is 300 m, and the bottom is covered with a water-impermeable material. An inclined channel region is built in the second section of the basin to form a beach. An obstruction is built to control access to an area including a beach. At least one recreational facility is built, including a restaurant, bar, kiosk, store, and/or cafe around a waterfront perimeter.
