The invention relates to a method for operating a motorized shutter device (1) of a motor vehicle (2), in which a control device (3) is provided for actuating a motorized drive (4) associated with the shutter device (1), and a distance sensor (6) coupled to the control device (3) is provided, by means of which distance sensor (6) the motorized drive (4) is driven by the motorized drive (4). According to the invention, a sensor value relating to an action of a person (P, P ') located outside the motor vehicle (2) is detected, and the control device (3) is used to check whether the detected sensor value satisfies a specified operator action criterion. According to the invention, a proximity criterion is specified as one of the operator action criteria, said proximity criterion relating to complying with a predetermined proximity movement of the detected person (P, P ') into a specified identification area (9); specifying, as one of the operator action criteria, a posture criterion relating to complying with a predetermined relative movement of the detected body part (8) of the person (P, P ') relative to other parts of the person (P, P') within a specified trigger area (10); and satisfying the approach criterion and the gesture criterion is defined as a necessary premise for at least one of the active operator actions.
