The invention provides a composite carbon material and a preparation method thereof. The preparation method at least comprises the following steps: providing a carbon matrix; mixing a tantalum-containing compound with an organic solvent to obtain tantalum-containing slurry; uniformly covering the tantalum-containing slurry on the surface of the carbon substrate to obtain a reaction layer on the carbon substrate; uniformly covering tantalum powder on the reaction layer to obtain a tantalum metal coating on the reaction layer; in a vacuum state, the carbon substrate with the tantalum metal coating is heated to a preset temperature, and heat preservation is conducted for a preset time; and cooling the heated carbon matrix to room temperature to obtain the composite carbon material. According to the composite carbon material and the preparation method thereof provided by the invention, the compactness and the quality of a tantalum carbide coating can be improved.
