The invention relates to the technical field of aggregate preparation, in particular to a thermal insulation aggregate and a preparation method thereof.The preparation method comprises the steps that coal gangue, fly ash, limestone and water are mixed and then granulated, and raw material balls are obtained; drying the raw nodules, preheating and sintering in sequence, and carrying out alkaline leaching and calcining again to obtain the thermal insulation aggregate; according to the thermal insulation aggregate prepared by the invention, the heat conductivity coefficient of the material is remarkably reduced while the requirement on structural strength is met. When the thermal insulation aggregate is applied to manufacturing of the concrete wall, the thermal insulation function of the concrete wall can be remarkably improved, the energy consumption of a building is reduced, the production cost is low, the production difficulty is small, and large-scale production is facilitated.
