In a roof window, a hinge assembly (9) is provided to allow a window frame (3) to be top-suspended in a first operating state corresponding to normal use, as the window frame (3) is intended to rotate between a closed position and an open position at or near a top frame member (21) and a top window frame member about a substantially horizontal first hinge axis (alpha), the hinge assembly (9) comprises a hinge unit (91) having a frame hinge portion (92) connected or connectable to at least the top frame member (21), a window frame hinge portion (93) connected to at least the top window frame member, and a hinge pin (94) connecting the frame hinge portion (92) with the window frame hinge portion (93). The frame hinge portion (92) is connected to the top frame member (21) and provided with a receiving structure (922) for a hinge pin (94) defining a first hinge axis (alpha), and the window frame hinge portion is connected to the top window frame member (31) and provided with a receiving structure (932) for the hinge pin (94) such that the hinge unit (91) forms a pin barrel hinge.
