The invention provides a method for controlling an automatic pool cleaning device to advance on the water surface of a pool. The method comprises the steps that the automatic pool cleaning device is controlled to advance on the bottom of the pool along the boundary of the pool; acquiring the closed loop completion duration of the automatic cleaning device for the water pool when the automatic cleaning device advances along the boundary of the water pool at the bottom of the water pool; the pool automatic cleaning device is controlled to advance on the water surface of the pool along the boundary of the pool; and on the basis of the obtained closed loop duration, determining whether the closed loop is completed when the automatic pool cleaning device advances along the boundary of the pool on the water surface of the pool.
