The vibrator has unbalance masses (3311, 3321, 3331) arranged on shafts (33, 35) that are supported in a housing in a rotatable manner, where the shafts are provided with toothed wheels (331-333, 351-353). An adjusting unit is provided for adjusting relative rotating positions of the masses. Inductive sensors (310) are arranged at a distance to each other at the circumference of the wheels and provided for detecting an angular acceleration of the masses. The sensors are connected with a programmable controller that compares measured values detected by the sensors with maximum values.
