The machine (10) has a mast (14) arranged in a longitudinal direction, and a bar (18) i.e. kelly, whose end (18a) is provided with a ground excavation tool (20) i.e. soil-mixing cutter. A carriage (16) includes a holder unit for holding the bar relative to the carriage. The carriage moves the bar along the longitudinal direction of the mast. The holder unit occupies a locked state in which the bar is prevented from moving in translation relative to the carriage, and an unlocked state in which the bar is free to move in translation relative to the carriage. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method of raising a bar of a ground excavation machine (2) a ground excavation method.
