External wall insulation system for thermally insulating an outside wall (2) of a building, the system comprising: - an insulating layer (10) attached to an outer surface (3) of said wall (2); - a finishing layer (20) attached to an outer surface (12) of said insulating layer (10), wherein the system is characterised in that the insulating layer (10) is a composite layer comprising a substantially high efficient insulation layer (13) facing the wall (2), which high efficient insulation layer (13) is adapted to provide efficient insulation properties to the wall (2) and a base layer (14) facing the finishing layer (20), which base layer (14) is adapted to cooperate with the finishing layer (20) so as to provide an efficient application basis for the finishing layer (20). The invention further relates to a wall comprising such a system and a method of thermally insulating a wall.
