Production of a zeolite-containing layer (I) on a metal-containing substrate (A) involves: (a) preparing a multi-component aqueous suspension, one component of which contains network-forming element(s) (II) selected from Group III - V non-transition elements and Group I - VIII transition elements; (b) introducing (A), also containing (II), into the suspension; and (c) heating to cause extraction of (II) from (A) and in-situ crystallization of (I) onto (A), the content of (II) in the suspension being sub-stoichiometric so that crystallization in the suspension is largely or completely inhibited in the suspension and occurs largely or completely on (A).
