The road milling machine has a milling drum housing (7) that is supported from a machine frame (1) such that an opening exists between milling drum housing and a ground surface. A milling drum (5) is positioned in milling drum housing and rotatable in a predetermined direction of rotation (D) about an axis of rotation (6). A hold-down device is arranged to close opening such that a gap is defined between milling drum and hold-down device. A distance between axis of rotation and hold-down device is increased in predetermined direction of rotation over a section of gap.
