A honeycomb filter of the present invention includes a honeycomb fired body made of silicon carbide, the honeycomb fired body including a large number of cells longitudinally placed in parallel with one another with a cell wall interposed between the cells and having a peripheral wall constituting a periphery of the honeycomb fired body, either one end portion of each of the cells being sealed, the cell wall having a thickness of 0.2 mm or less, the peripheral wall having a thickness larger than the thickness of the cell wall, a silicon-containing oxide layer being formed on the surfaces of silicon carbide particles which form the honeycomb fired body, the honeycomb filter being used for capturing particulate matters in exhaust gas from a gasoline engine.
