A method of preparing a fiber for use in forming a ceramic matrix composite material comprises the steps of removing an organic sizing (12) from a fiber (10) to provide pyrolyzed remnants (22) on the fiber (10), and using the pyrolyzed remnants (22) as a reactant to provide an interface coating (32a;32b) on the fiber (10).
