The present invention relates to a retarder for alkali activated binders that comprise an alumino-silicate source and an activator, wherein the retarder contains a boron compound and at least one of acetic acid or an acetate. The invention further relates to an alkali activated binder containing the retarder, a method of retarding alkali activated binders by adding the retarder and to the use of the binder for manufacturing precast products or ready mix concrete.
