The invention relates to a retaining device (1) for wall elements (6) of wall coverings, in particular transparent or translucent wall elements that can be backlit, the retaining device having at least one supporting element (4) that can be fixed on the structure side, in addition to retaining elements (2), which spatially associate the wall elements (6) with the supporting element (4), fixing them to one another. In said retaining device, at least two mutually spaced retaining elements (2) for each wall element (6) are fixed to the wall element (6) in the region of the supporting-element-side rear face (8) of said wall element (6), such that the retaining elements (2) project from the rear face (8) of the wall element (6) in identical alignment and at an angle (α) to said face, can be suspended, hook-like, by their ends projecting from the rear face (8) of the wall element (6), on sections (7) of the supporting element (4) and can be detachably fixed to the supporting element (4). In addition, the retaining elements (2) can be elongated, preferably pencil-shaped, and insertable into bore-like depressions (5) in the region of the supporting-element-side rear face (8) of the wall element (6).
