COMPOSITION BASED ON CALCIUM CARBONATE FOR USE AS A CEMENT
The present invention is directed to a composition for use as a cement comprising from 60 to 99 wt % of calcium carbonate and from 0 to 40 % by weight of cement, and at least one polysaccharide in an amount comprised between 0.1 and 10 wt %, wherein the polysaccharide has an average negative charge of at least 0.5 in terms of charge/saccharide unit, and wherein the wt % is based on the dry composition. The composition preferably comprises less than 30 wt % cement and from 1 to 10 wt % polysaccharide. A preferred polysaccharide is chondroitin sulfate, optionally with a small amount of at least another polysaccharide, e.g. sodium alginate. The invention is also directed to a method for the preparation of a cementitious composition as previously defined, comprising the following steps: a) preparing a mixture of carbonate and optionally cement; b) adding water, comprising from 0.1 to 10 wt% of at least one polysaccharide, in an amount comprised between 10 and 100% based on the amount of the mixture a); and c) mixing water with the mixture of carbonate and optionally cement.
