The invention relates to a device for the thermal treatment of mineral, fragmented material, wherein the device has substantially at least two shafts (2, 3) that are arranged parallel to one another, wherein the shafts are formed with a substantially continuous lateral wall (6, 7) from the receiving region to the output of the fragmented material, wherein each of the at least two shafts (2, 3) has at least one annular duct (18, 19), which is arranged around the lateral wall (6, 7), wherein the annular ducts (18, 19) of the shafts (2, 3) are connected together, and to a method for operating same.
