PROCESS AND APPARATUS FOR REFINING MOLTEN GLASS
The disclosure relates to an apparatus (10, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600) and a process for melting and refining molten glass. The apparatus includes:a melting chamber (16);a refining chamber (18) downstream of said melting chamber;a throat (22) between said melting chamber and said refining chamber; anda porous body (30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 40, 140, 214, 322, 410, 516, 620, 622, 624) disposed at least partially within at least one of said melting chamber, said refining chamber, and said throat, and being at least partially submerged within the molten glass, said porous body including:an inlet (42, 216); andan outlet (44, 218) in fluid communication with said inlet and spaced apart from said inlet in a longitudinal direction; andwherein said porous body is monolithic and has a three-dimensional non-planar shape, and wherein the porous body has a flow-through structure and includes a labyrinth of pores (46, 46', 146) through which molten glass can flow between said inlet and said outlet, wherein said pores are defined by walls (48, 150) having wall surfaces (50, 148) that are configured to interact with molten glass flowing between said inlet and said outlet to help refine the molten glass.
PROCESS AND APPARATUS FOR REFINING MOLTEN GLASS
The disclosure relates to an apparatus (10, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600) and a process for melting and refining molten glass. The apparatus includes:a melting chamber (16);a refining chamber (18) downstream of said melting chamber;a throat (22) between said melting chamber and said refining chamber; anda porous body (30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 40, 140, 214, 322, 410, 516, 620, 622, 624) disposed at least partially within at least one of said melting chamber, said refining chamber, and said throat, and being at least partially submerged within the molten glass, said porous body including:an inlet (42, 216); andan outlet (44, 218) in fluid communication with said inlet and spaced apart from said inlet in a longitudinal direction; andwherein said porous body is monolithic and has a three-dimensional non-planar shape, and wherein the porous body has a flow-through structure and includes a labyrinth of pores (46, 46', 146) through which molten glass can flow between said inlet and said outlet, wherein said pores are defined by walls (48, 150) having wall surfaces (50, 148) that are configured to interact with molten glass flowing between said inlet and said outlet to help refine the molten glass.
