ENVIRONMENTAL BARRIER COATING WITH POROUS BOND COAT LAYER
A gas turbine engine article (60) includes a substrate (62) and an environmental barrier coating (EBC) system (64) disposed on the substrate (62). The EBC system includes, from the substrate (62), a dense bond coat layer (66), a porous bond coat layer (68), and a topcoat layer (70) in contact with the porous bond coat layer (68) at an interface (72). The porous bond coat layer (68) includes a matrix (68a), oxygen-scavenging gas-evolution particles (68b) dispersed through the matrix, and engineered buffer pores (68c). The oxygen-scavenging gas-evolution particles (68b) react with oxygen and generate a gaseous byproduct that diffuses through the interface (72) to escape the EBC system (64). The engineered buffer pores (68c) buffer diffusion of gaseous byproduct to the interface (72) by retaining at least a portion of the gaseous byproduct.
