The invention relates to a method of making an element (5) for a green roof, such as a pitched roof (15) or a flat roof, or a green wall comprising the steps ofproviding an open reinforcement structure (3) comprising voids,providing a flowable matrix material (4) containing a substrate for water retention,introducing or preparing the matrix material (4) containing the substrate in the voids of the reinforcement (3) structure,allowing the matrix material (4) to harden to form a solid matrix (4) embedding the substrate and the reinforcement structure (3).
