The invention relates to a chemically and hydraulically binding refractory binder composition comprising two main components C1 and C2, wherein C1 comprises at least one compound selected from the group consisting of neutral, acidic or amphoteric metal salts or esters of a carboxylic acid, carboxylates, carboxylate esters, and polyelectrolytes, and C2 comprises at least one compound selected from the group consisting of metal oxides, metal hydroxides, metal carbonates, layered double hydroxides, precursors of layered double hydroxides, layered double oxides, precursors of layered double oxides, mixed oxides, precursors of mixed oxides, and doped oxides, where said binder composition after mixing with water will set and harden at ambient temperature within a readily acceptable, predetermined, adjustable period of time. The invention further relates to materials and products bound with the refractory binder and to applications thereof in the refractory, metallurgical, cement, glass, ceramic, electronic and construction industry and other industries.
