The invention relates to a method for producing a decorative surface on a workpiece (1), said method comprising the following steps: - step (S1): providing a workpiece (1) with a workpiece surface (1a) on which a base decoration (2) is located; - step (S2): detecting the base decoration (2) on the workpiece surface (1a) using a detection device (20); - step (S3): measuring the detected base decoration (2); - step (S4): providing a target additional decoration template (200) for an additional decoration (3), the target additional decoration template (200) being synchronous with a target base decoration (150); - step (S5): adapting the target additional decoration template (200) on the basis of the measured base decoration so as to obtain an adapted target additional decoration template (200') according to which the additional decoration can be applied at least partially synchronised with the base decoration; - step (S6): using an application device (30) to apply the additional decoration (3) to the workpiece (1) above the base decoration (2) in accordance with the adapted target additional decoration template (200'). The invention also relates to a device for carrying out the method.
