The invention relates to a system for insulating buildings from the outside that comprises an insulator (1) covered with cladding plates (2), characterised in that the steam diffusion resistance of the cladding plates (2) and of the other optional constituents of the insulating system covering the same, corresponds to an equivalent air thickness Sd not exceeding 0.40 m, preferably 0.30 m and most preferably 0.20 m. The system has sufficient breathability to avoid the long and costly construction of a ventilated facade.
