Described herein is a retractable staircase (10) comprising a first side stringer (14) and a second, substantially parallel, side stringer (12) connected by a plurality of steps (42). The first side stringer (14) is fixedly attached to a wall and the second side stringer (12) is pivotally movable about the first side stringer (14) between an extended position, where the steps (42) lie substantially horizontally between the stringers (12, 14), and a retracted position where the steps (42) lie substantially vertically between the stringers (12, 14). The retractable staircase (10) may also include a collapsible handrail (16) and a gate (50) that are interconnected with the side stringers (12, 14) and the pivoting steps (42) so that when one of them is moved, the other two move substantially simultaneously.
