A piling apparatus 301 for use in a bore 404 comprising an impression-forming module 308 having an impression forming element that is configured to extend outwards when actuated, to form an impression in the side of the bore 402. The apparatus further comprises an auxiliary module 311 configured to perform a secondary function within the bore. The impression-forming modules are detachably connected such that the impression-forming modules can be arranged or rearranged in different numbers or configurations. Each of the impression-forming modules comprises a connection interface for detachable connection to an adjacent module. The auxiliary module may be a camera. The impressions may be used to form a stronger pile when the bore is filled to form a concrete pile.
