A flood barrier comprises a curved cover member 3 with a peripheral frame 1, a mounting member 17 extending from the curved cover member towards the plane of the frame but not intersecting the same, mounted on the mounting member, e.g. by a screw thread, is an elongate securing member 21 to engage in with opposing sides of the opening . The securing member is releasably urged towards the cover member such that the frame and the opposing end regions of the securing member are urged against outer and inner regions respectively of the building surrounding the opening. Also disclosed is a situation where the mounting member extends beyond the plane of the frame. The barrier may have reflective strip (11 Fig 1) or securing means for a sign (13) located at the top of the barrier. A handle 15 may be provided on the inside of the cover. The securing member may move laterally within an elongate aperture or slot 27.
