A hook device 10 comprises a hook member 12 and a gate member 14 which are moveable with respect to one another between open and closed states. A surface of the gate 34 and an internal surface 28 of the hook overlap during at least part of the movement between the open and closed states. The internal surface and the surface of the gate may be arranged to form an obtuse or right angle 36 with one another during at least part of the movement of the members between the open and closed states. The hook and the gate may be pivotally coupled at point P and may include gripping formations such as a recess 40 and a projection 42. The hook and gate may be resiliently biased to adopt the closed state.
